The Ospreys belted four home runs in the first game of the day as they racked up 26 hits in 16 total at bats. Junior Corbin Olmstead led the offensive onslaught with a 6-for-8 effort at the plate including two doubles and his second homer of the year. Nick Karmeris also had himself a nice afternoon, going 5-for-9 with five RBIs. He drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth of game two.
The two victories make it seven in-a-row for the Ospreys, the longest win streak under Head Coach Smoke Laval and the longest since North Florida strung eight together in 2006.
Game 1
The Ospreys put the game out of reach early in game one thanks to a five-run first inning. It was the most runs in the first inning of any game this season. The frame was highlighted by Ryan Roberson's three-run homer to right center field. The long ball was the first of the year and the 14th of his career.
After the Bears crept back into the game by scoring a run in three consecutive innings the Ospreys went on to score nine unanswered runs. A pair of three-run home runs, one by senior Trent Higginbothem in the fourth and the other by Donnie Dewees in the seventh powered the offensive spurt.
After a five-hit performance on Friday night, Dewees reached base in all five at bats in game one and finished game one, 3-for-3 with four runs and three RBIs. He was not retired until his first at bat in the nightcap. Dating back to last weekend's win against Fairfield, Dewees reached base in 11-straight at bats. He is currently in the midst of a 14-game hit streak.
Brown made things interesting in the ninth inning and scored six runs to close the deficit to three runs with two outs in the ninth. Reliever Matthew Naylor finally was able to end the ninth inning outburst by inducing a fly out to center field that ended the game.
Starting pitcher Tyler DuPont allowed only three of the 12 Bear runs despite pitching six innings. DuPont struck out two and collected his team-leading, third win of the spring. He remains unblemished with a 3-0 record and has a team-high 30.1 innings pitched in 2015.
Game 2
Things looked bleak for the Ospreys after Brown took their first lead of the series in the top of the sixth. A double by Josh Huntley gave the Bears a 3-2 lead and one inning later Tim McKeithan scored on a wild pitch to give Brown a 4-2 advantage.
Senior Garrick Ferguson singled home the Ospreys' third run of the game in the seventh. Olmstead led the frame off with a double off the wall and scored on Ferguson's liner through the left side.
Reliever Alex Smith set the tone for the North Florida comeback in the top of the eighth. The first two runners reached and he finally recorded the first out at third base on a comebacker. He then went on to strike out the next two batters sending a jolt of energy to the Osprey bench.
The Brown pitching staff didn't do much to preserve the one-run lead as two relievers combined to walk the first three batters and Roberson was hit by a pitch to force in the game-tying run. That set the stage for Karmeris who ripped a single through the right side that scored two runs and gave North Florida the lead for good. Olmstead followed with his fourth hit of the afternoon that scored Roberson and all the sudden put the home team up, 7-4
Two more runs eventually crossed on a fielding error at second base, capping a six-run, eighth inning for the Ospreys.
Smith was credited with the win, improving his record on the season to 2-1. The hard-throwing right-hander pitched 2.2 innings and struck out three batters.
Brown's Jake Levine homered twice in the contest, each of the solo variety. Â
The Ospreys will close out the series against the Bears tomorrow with an 11:30 a.m. first pitch at Harmon Stadium.
