MYRTLE BEACH, Fla. -- Bolstered by four players finishing in the Top 20 including co-medalist Joey Petronio, the No. 25-ranked North Florida men's golf team claimed their third team title on Tuesday by topping the field by 12 strokes in the General Hackler Championship at The Dunes Golf & Beach Club.
The Ospreys erased a three shot deficit to start the final round by firing a 1-under 287, the lowest round of the day. UNF posted a three-round total of 3-under 861 as second round leader North Carolina State slipped to second at 873. Petronio, a senior, used a 1-under 71 to earn co-medalist honors with a tournament total of 212 (-4), marking the third medalist title of his career and second of the season.
"It was a great effort by the team today bouncing back from yesterday's finish," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "It was a tremendous job by Joey getting another win despite not playing his best golf. It was nice to see us back up our strong performance last week at The Hayt with another good tournament showing. The guys will get a weekend off before we continue our season with another tough event in the Schenkel."
Fellow senior Parker Jones joined Petronio among the Top 10 individuals after shooting a final round even-par 72 to finish tied for ninth at 217 (+1). Junior Austin Padova led the way for UNF in the final round firing a 3-under 69 to finish tied for 13th at 219. Junior Taylor Hancock earned a 17th place tie at 220 including a 79 on Tuesday, while redshirt freshman Dillon Woods rounded out the Osprey lineup in a tie for 37th (224) with a final round 75. In addition, junior Joe Stepnes, who competed as an individual, earned a tie for 32nd (223) highlighted by his final round 1-over 73.
UNF and NC State were joined in the Top Five squads by Iowa State (876), North Texas (877) and Charlotte (879). Petronio shared medalist honors with Winthrop's Zach Seabolt and Iowa State's Nick Voke.
North Florida next returns to competition on Mar. 20-22 at The Schenkel in Statesboro, Ga.
