PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The North Florida women's golf team rallied with 3.5 points during the afternoon singles matches but were unable to overcome an early deficit in a hard fought 5-4 loss to rival Jacksonville on Monday in the 3rd annual Hughes Cup Match at TPC Sawgrass.
The Ospreys got singles wins from juniors Emelie Alpe and Belinda George along with sophomore Nathalie Nygren. Sophomore Lauren Coe also earned a halve in her match against JU's Jessica Welch, the leading scorer in the event.
Jacksonville built a three-point advantage (3.5-0.5) during the morning pairs competition as Welch sparked the Dolphins to a pair of wins. The senior teammed with Megan Collins for a 3&1 win over George and Coe in four ball, then topped the UNF pair again with Maria Juliana Feuyo, 3&1, in alternate shot. UNF's lone point in pairs play was a halve earned by Alpe and Kelly Aylwin against Sabrina Rumbaugh and Shania Berger.
"I was extremely proud of how the girls competed throughout the match," said UNF head coach Joanne Berglund. "We missed some opportunites during the pairs matches and dug ourselves a hole, but I thought the team really played with some determination and grit during the afternoon session and made a great charge. This event is always commpetitive and one we look forward to every year. We are so thankful to Bill Hughes and TPC Sawgrass for providing us this chance to not only play a great course but also showcase collegiate women's golf in this area."
North Florida next begins its spring tournament schedule on Feb. 23-24 at the Amelia Island Collegiate.
