CHARLESTON, S.C. – The North Florida (6-5) offense got behind another lockdown performance on the mound by sophomore Tyler DuPont in a 14-2 victory over St. John's (5-4) this afternoon at CSU Ballpark. The Ospreys scored a combined nine runs in their final three turns at the plate put the game out of reach.
Â
For the second-straight start, DuPont was lights out, limiting St. John's to just two runs and a season-low, six hits. He fanned a career-best, six batters and pitched eight strong innings. Three times he sat down the Red Storm in order as he improved to 2-0 on the season.
Â
Senior Trent Higginbothem had a career afternoon, finishing 4-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored and four runs batted in. It marked the second time in the last four games he has recorded four RBIs in a game and now leads the team with a .475 batting average. Catcher James Abbatinozzi matched his career best with four hits and scored twice.
Â
The Ospreys got another productive day from lead-off man Patrick Ervin who was 3-for-6 with four RBIs and a run scored. He went 5-for-10 against the Red Storm in two games and drove in five runs.
Â
The Red Storm's first run of the game came in the first inning when Zach Lauricella singled which allowed Michael Donadio to score from second. Donadio was the beneficiary of a fly ball that was lost in the sun by Osprey centerfielder Alex Bacon. The only other offense by St. John's came off the bat of Jarred Maderos who homered in the seventh inning. He drove a DuPont off-speed pitch over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.
Â
The Ospreys tied the game up when Higginbothem singled home Donnie Dewees in the top of the fourth. Dewees legged out a double on a well struck ball into the right centerfield gap. Â He scored twice in the game and was 2-for-5 with an RBI on the day.
Â
A four-run rally in the top of the fifth gave the Ospreys a 5-1 lead and was more than enough for DuPont to work with. The inning was highlighted by a pair of two-RBI hits from Higginbothem and Ervin. Ervin put the Ospreys out in front for the first time with a single up the middle. Higginbothem laced the first of his two doubles on the afternoon that scored Ervin and Bacon.
Â
The Ospreys came into the weekend with 23 runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings and continued the trend today, scoring nine runs in their final three turns at the plate. The game was blown open in the top of the ninth with five runs on five hits. Four of the five runs were unearned as both Red Storm errors were committed in the frame.
Â
The ninth inning outburst included the first hit and RBI as an Osprey from Dakota Higdon who came on as a pinch hitter.
Â
Dan VanSickle relieved DuPont the final inning and retired the Red Storm in order. He struck out two and has not allowed a run in his last two appearances.
Â
The Red Storm starting pitcher and two-time Big East Player of the Week Cody Stashak was charged with all five runs in 4.2 innings of work. He came into the game sporting a 0.68 ERA and was unbeaten in two previous starts.
Â
The win was the first ever against the Red Storm in three meetings. St. John's was picked to win the Big East in the 2015 preseason poll.
Â
North Florida will be take on host Charleston Southern tonight and wrap up their stay in Charleston on Sunday with a 2:00 p.m. game against the Buccaneers.
