JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Hoping to finish their historic regular season run on a high note, the North Florida basketball team hosts in-state rival Stetson in the regular season finale on Saturday in UNF Arena at 7 p.m.
The Ospreys (19-11, 11-2 ASun) grabbed a share of the league's top spot with their road victory over Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night. Having swept FGCU in the regular season, UNF currently holds the tiebreaker with the Eagles for the top seed position in next week's Atlantic Sun Conference tournament should the squads finish the regular season tied.
In the win over FGCU, Beau Beech led the way posting his second consecutive double-double with 22 points and a career best 13 rebounds. Senior Jalen Nesbitt added 18 points and fellow junior Demarcus Daniels chipped in 15 points, including 10 in the decisive second half.Â
The Hatters (9-20, 3-10) enter the finale following a 70-67 victory over Jacksonville on Wednesday night. The victory snapped a five-game skid for Stetson and moved them into a tie for seventh place with the Dolphins with one game remaining.
In the first meeting of the year between UNF and Stetson, the Ospreys posted an 80-65 win in DeLand, Fla. Beech and Nesbitt were the leading scorers for UNF in that contest with both finishing with 17 points. In addition, North Florida was hot from long distance connecting on 12 three-pointers. Sophomore Chris Davenport missed the game while sitting out a one-game suspension due to a pair of technicals in the previous game.
Prior to Saturday night's game, UNF will honor the senior duo of Nesbitt and Devin Wilson in a pregame ceremony. The pair of been a part of the winningest two-year span in program history having helped lead the Ospreys to 35 wins so far.
After hosting the Hatters, North Florida makes a bit more history when UNF hosts an Atlantic Sun Conference tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. It marks the first home postseason game in program history.
