PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The No. 29-ranked North Florida men's golf team will host its annual home event, The Hayt, starting Friday morning at the Sawgrass Country Club. This year's event features eight teams currently ranked in the Top 50 nationally.
The three-day, 54-hole tournament consistently draws one of the most competitive fields in the country. Two-time defending national champion No. 12-ranked Alabama highlights a field that also includes defending tournament champion No. 30 Oklahoma State along with No. 10 UCLA and No. 13 Texas. Other squads in the top 50 include No. 33 East Carolina, No. 34 UAB and No. 41 Louisville.
The Ospreys, who have claimed the tournament championship in their home event three times with their last title coming in 2013, look to continue another strong season of play. UNF posted a pair of tournament titles during the fall campaign and boast a pair of Top 10 showings this spring including a seventh-place finish two weeks ago at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
"It is always an honor and privilege for us to get to host the Hayt," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We are looking forward to another great event. The guys are excited about the opportunity of opening play alongside the last two national champions in Alabama and Texas. The tournament features a great field and the course is in great shape. It will be tremendous playing in front of our home crowd and the local golfing community."
Senior Joey Petronio heads up the lineup for UNF this weekend with hopes of building on a career-best season which includes five Top 20 finishes. Fellow senior Parker Jones, juniors Taylor Hancock and Austin Padova along with reshirt freshman Dillon Woods round out the Osprey squad. In addition, a trio of UNF linksters including Joe Stephnes, Jordan Batchelor and Osten Waite will compete in the event as individuals.
Tournament play on the par 72, 6,976-yard layout at Sawgrass CC begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday off both holes No. 1 and 10. The Ospreys are slated to tee off alongside Texas and Alabama beginning at 10:15 a.m. on the first hole.
The Hayt is open to the public with free admission with live scoring available for all three rounds online at www.Golfstat.com.
