GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Bolstered by a pair of even par final rounds from the senior duo of Joey Petronio and MJ Maguire, the No. 27 North Florida men's golf climbed three spots in the final standings to finish seventh in the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the Mark Bostick Golf Course on Sunday.
The Ospreys recorded their best round of the spring season on the final day shooting a 4-over par 284 en route to a 54-hole total of 874. Maguire was UNF's top finisher at the event earning a tie for 19th with a three-round score of 216 (+6), including his final round 70 (E).
Petronio (70) and junior Taylor Hancock (73) both tied for 29th with matching final scores of 219, while junior Austin Padova fired his best round of the tournament, a 1-over 71, on Sunday to finish tied for 33rd at 220. Redshirt freshman Dillon Woods rounded out the Osprey lineup for the Gator with a 74 to finish in a tie for 56th at 227.
"We definitely had a better round today," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We did a lot of things well, but still had a few too many avoidable mistakes that prevented us from having a really good round. We need to build on this performance as The Hayt is up next. We will be working hard to be ready for our home event."
No. 23 South Florida captured the team title with a final tally of 5-under 835, eight shots in front of runner-up Arkansas with an 843. No. 3 Florida State finished third at 845 with tournament host Florida (854) and No. 50 Georgia Southern (867) joining them in the Top Five.
USF's Claudio Correa was the individual medalist after posting a three-round total of 5-under 205.
North Florida will have a two week break before hosting their home event, The Hayt, on Feb. 27-Mar. 1 at tSawgrass Country Club in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
