GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The No. 27-ranked North Florida golf team is in 10th place after battling cold and windy conditions and a challenging field on the opening day of play at the SunTrust Gator Invitational on Saturday.
The Ospreys posted rounds of 294-296=590 on the par 70, 6,701-yard layout of the Mark Bostick Golf Course.
Senior MJ Maguire, who finished with rounds of 73-73=146, and junior Taylor Hancock shooting 72-74=146 both ended the day tied for 23rd to lead the UNF lineup.
Senior Joey Petronio and junior Austin Padova were tied for 38th at 149 following rounds of 73-76 and 76-73, respectively. Redshirt freshman Dillon Woods is tied for 60th after posting scores of 76-77=153, to round the Osprey squad.
"Today's was not one of our better days," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We had way too many mistakes throughout the day. We battled during the middle of the round to try and have a decent score but really struggle to finish. We need to rest up and regroup to hopefully make a final round push."
No. 23 South Florida was the lone team under par finishing the 36-hole day with a total of 2-under 558, two shots ahead of Arkansas at even-par 560. No. 3 Florida State is third at 563 with tournameht host Florida (567) and No. 6 Vanderbilt (583) filling out the top five in the team competition standings.
Tournament action concludes with a final round of 18 holes on Sunday. Live scoring results are available for the event at www.golfstat.com
