JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The North Florida basketball team netted a Division I program point total highlighted by six different players scoring double digits as the Ospreys raced to a 117-71 victory over Coastal Georgia.
UNF improved to 7-4 on the season following the record-setting performance. The total marked just the fifth triple-digit performance in the program's 11-year Division I era and the most points scored since tallying 120 exactly 18 years ago against Augusta State. The margin of victory, 46 points, equaled the largest win in the Division I era.
Demarcus Daniels led the Ospreys with 20 points while Trent Mackey chipped in 17. Sophomore Nick Malonga finished with a career best 15 points followed by 14 from Aaron Bodager, 13 for Dallas Moore and 10 by Chris Davenport.Â
The Ospreys continued to excel from long distance connecting on 14 three-pointers marking the eighth game this season they have made 10 or more. In addition, UNF posted 24 assists on 37 baskets with nine different players notching an assist.
"I was very proud of the efficient and unselfish play of our team tonight," said head coach Matthew Driscoll. "We shot the ball extremely well and did a great job of sharing the ball. I thought we got strong effort from the starters as well as the guys coming off the bench. We started a little slowly but quickly turned things around especially on the defensive end. It was exciting to be back at home."
The Mariners (4-8) kept things close over the opening few minutes of play as Coastal Georgia and North Florida took turns with the lead. Coastal led 17-16 with 14 minutes left in the first half before seven straight points by UNF gave the Ospreys a lead they would never relinquish.
UNF expanded its lead to double digits, 31-21, with just under 10 minutes left in the first period and closed the half on an 11-0 run to hold a 62-33 advantage at the break.
The Ospreys quickly pushed the margin over 30 and reached the 100 point mark following a pair of free throws by Moore with 7:45 left in the game. Redshirt senior Ismaila Dauda finished with a career best eight points in eight minutes of action, making 6 of 11 free throw attempts down the stretch.
North Florida continues its four-game home stand Monday when the Ospreys welcome in-state foe FlU to UNF Arena at 7 p.m.
