Day 1 Results
VERO BEACH, Fla. -- No. 44-ranked North Florida men's golf finished the opening day of play of the Quail Valley Collegiate Invitational in fourth place after carding rounds of 280-289, Monday at Quail Valley Golf Club (par 72 / 7,350 yards).
The Ospreys, who are the defending champions of the event, held a two-shot lead after the morning round of play but slid to fourth with a 36-hole total of 569. Freshman Andrew Alligood led the way for UNF finishing with at 5-under 139, highlighted by a career best 68 followed by a 71.
"We played okay in the morning round but very poorly in the afternoon," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We made way too many mistakes that should not happen. We just need to get some rest and go back out and battle in the final round. I'm really proud of the play of Andrew as he kept us in the event."
Senior Taylor Hancock matched Alligood's morning round effort, shooting a 4-under 68 and added a 1-over 73 in the second round to close the day tied for ninth at 141. Freshman Travis Trace is tied for 29th at 2-over 146 (74-72) while fellow freshman Philip Knowles (70-77) and senior Austin Padova (74-73) are tied for 32nd at 3-over 147.
No. 62-ranked Michigan State leads the 15-team field, which includes 10 teams ranked in the nation's Top 100, after carding a two-round tallof 565. No. 88 North Texas and No. 70 Jacksonville are tied for second at 566 with UNF and No. 37 North Carolina State (570) rounding out the Top 5. Thomas Rosemueller, of North Texas, tops the individual medalist standings at 11-under 133.
Tournament action at Quail Valley concludes with a final round of play Tuesday. North Florida begins play at 8:45 a.m. from Hole 1 alongside N.C. State and Memphis. Live scoring of the event is available online at BirdieFire.com.
