JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Paced by a dominating performance that included claiming seven of the top eight finishers, the North Florida women's cross country team repeated as team champions of their home event, the 110% UNF Cross Country Invitational held Saturday morning at the Hayt Golf Center.
Senior Andelka Tancic finished in a time of 18:15.01 on the 5K course to lead the Ospreys sweep of the top five finishers. As a team, UNF collected a total of 15 points.
A pair of freshmen followed Tancic at the finish line with Eden Meyer, a Jacksonville native, earning second in 18:18.14 and Olsen Dagmar in third at 19:03.25. Junior Alexis Irwin (19:06.70) and senior Alyssa Brandt (19:09.48) rounded out the top five.
"It was very encouraging to see Eden (Meyer) running strong at the front along with Andelka (Tancic)," said head coach Jeff Pigg. "She ran here last year as a high school runner so it was really fun to have her running for us this year. Dagmar (Olsen), who is really a half-miler, showed she has extreme talent finishing third for us today. It was also nice to see Alexis Irvin and Alyssa Brandt up near the front for us. Overall it was just a real exciting day for our program."
Stetson sophomore Clarissa Consol was the first non-UNF finisher in sixth, helping the Hatters earn a second-place team finish with a score of 48.
Sophomore Lauren Gonzalez (19:14.14) and junior Jessica Kafer (19:18.60), rounded out the list of scoring runners for the Ospreys, who had 22 runners compete in Saturday's home meet.
Jacksonville University finished third in the collegiate team competition with a final score of 77 followed by Edward Waters at 110. In the prep girls' race, Bolles High School (32) edged Creekside High (40) to win the team championship.
North Florida will now take a few weeks off from competition before returning to race on Sept. 20 at the Mountain Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla.
