JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Playing in the most competitive field in the program's two-year history, the North Florida women's golf team posted a 10th place finish Tuesday in the Web.com Intercollegiate at Marsh Landing Country Club.
The Ospreys finished the 54-hole event with a program record total of 894 following a final round 307 and a school record low 2-under 286 on Monday. The 19-team field of the Web.com Intercollegiate featured 14 squads ranked among the nation's Top 100 highlighted by four teams in the Top 50.
"Overall, I feel like me competed well in the tournament," said UNF head coach Joanne Steele. "Today we really fought through some tough weather conditions early in the round and were able to record a Top 10 finish in a tournament filled with some of the nation's top programs. We have definitely gained some confidence heading into the conference championship next week. Our plan is to work hard in this week of preparation and focus on improving each players weaker spots so that we can give ourselves the opportunity to make a run a the championship."
Sophomore Emelie Alpe led the charge for UNF shooting a final round 74 en route to carding a personal best total of 2-over 218. Her solid performance resulted in a tie for 15th, marking her third consecutive Top 20 showing.
Fellow sophomore Kelly Aylwin also recorded a personal best tournament finish at 225 to finish in a tie for 43rd after a final round 77. Freshman Nathalie Nygren posted a final round 77 in finishing tied for 69th at 231 along with sophomore teammate Belinda George, who had a final round 79.
Freshman Lauren Coe finished tied for 78th at 235 to round out the Osprey lineup.
In the team competition, No. 35 Florida State tallied a tournament record total of 851 in claiming the title by 24 strokes. East Carolina finished second at 875 followed by No. 24 Ohio State (877), No. 17 UCF (882), Maryland (883), Minnesota (884), No. 38 Louisville (884), Missouri (884), Chattanooga (885), UNF, Toledo (896), McNeese State (903), Jacksonville (905), FIU (905), Michigan (909), Illinois (909), Sam Houston State (912), Cincinnati (924) and James Madison (935).
FSU's Matlida Castren also bettered the tournament's individual medalist record by eight strokes, finishing with a 12-under 204 over three rounds of play.
North Florida now turns its attention to the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship tournament scheduled for Apr. 14-16 in Jekyll Island, Ga.
