Out of the Box
Nice to Meet You: At this weekend's Georgia Bulldog Invitational, the Ospreys will take on three schools (Western Carolina, Georgia, Buffalo) for the first time. The three schools come into this weekend with a combined record of 21-9 in 2014.
Red-Hot Weeks: Right fielder Drew Weeks has been swinging a hot bat to begin his junior campaign. He is in the midst of a 18-game hitting streak dating back to last season and is ranked sixth in the country with a .500 batting average. He leads the Atlantic Sun with 20 hits and boasts a .565 on-base percentage.
Flashing the Leather: The Ospreys have made only two errors in their last five games and for the season have committed an Atlantic Sun low, 10 errors. They have posted a .973 fielding percentage which is second by only .001 to Jacksonville in the A-Sun.
Breaking Down the Hits: Despite six losses on the season, the Ospreys have out-hit opponents 98-94. In six of the 10 games this year, the Ospreys have racked up 10 or more hits. UNF has struggled to come up with the timely hit so far, hitting only .252 with runners in scoring position. Last season while the Ospreys were one of the top offenses in the country, they hit a staggering, .309 with runners on second and/or third.
Against Ranked Opponents: UNF has played five games against ranked opponents through the first 10 games, which is already the most since 2010. The Ospreys squared off against a school record, eight ranked foes in 2008.Â
Unfamiliar Territory: The Ospreys were swept by No. 17 North Carolina this past weekend. It was the first time the Ospreys were swept in a three-game series against a non-conference opponent since losing all three to Tulane in February of 2007. The Ospreys have dropped the four-straight games for the first time since 2012. UNF hasn't lost five consecutive games since 2011.Â
About Georgia: The Bulldog Invitational falls right in the middle of a 16-game homestand for Georgia. The host of this weekend's tournament, has won five-straight games and have already played two games this week. The Bulldogs won, 1-0 in their final at bat on Tuesday night against Georgia Tech thanks to a two-out RBI single by Brandon Stephens. The Georgia offense awoke in Wednesday night's contest, defeating Charleston Southern, 14-5.Â
About Western Carolina: The Catamounts are fresh off a marathon, 18-10 win over #15 Clemson on Tuesday night. Western Carolina scored all 18 runs prior to the top of the sixth inning and held on for the upset victory. In Sunday's series finale with La Salle, the Catamounts posted 20 runs in a 20-10 win. Junior Bradly Strong and Aaron Attaway both hit for the cycle as the Catamounts out-hit La Salle, 21-13. Western Carolina has won seven games in a row coming into the weekend tournament.
About Buffalo: Winners of six of their first seven games, the Bulls finished off the VMI Tournament last Sunday with a walk-off, 5-3 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore. Senior Mike Carcello ended the game on a two-run home run to left field. The Bulls have outscored opponents this season 43-15 and are averaging almost 10 hits per game.
