JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—The University of North Florida women's tennis team downed rival East Tennessee State 4-0 on Friday morning at the UNF Tennis Complex.
"We knew we needed to step up in every position and we did," said head coach Audra Cohen. "It was a whole team effort and this entire program decided they were going to take this match from ETSU. I am proud of how well we competed and how much heart they poured out there on the court in every match. We still have a lot of tennis left to play in the season, so we are taking this win in stride and looking ahead to our match tomorrow versus USC Upstate."
The Ospreys clinched the doubles point to start the match. Marina Cunningham and Taylor Hollander claimed their seventh-straight victory with an 8-4 win over ETSU's Salma Dahbi and Sofia Espana at the No. 2 position. At the No. 1 spot, Simona Weymar and Rebeca Pereira grabbed an 8-7 (11-9) victory over Ana Gerbasi and Lyn Yee Choo to clinch the doubles point.
The Ospreys claimed three quick singles matches to secure the match victory. Michelle Valdez won 6-0, 6-3 over ETSU's Espana at No. 4 singles. At the No. 3 singles, Esther Zuniga made quick work of Gerbasi, taking a 6-1, 6-2 victory. Weymar sealed the match with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Andreazza at the No. 1 spot.
"I am so happy that there was such a great vibe between our courts," added UNF senior Simona Weymar. "Our focus enabled us to not give ETSU any opportunity to beat us today."
