Out of the Box
The Bluegrass State Welcomes You:Â This will be the first time in the program's history that the Ospreys will play baseball in the state of Kentucky. The road trip to play NKU is the furthest of the season, stretching 820 miles from Jacksonville. North Florida will make one more lengthy road trip this season to play conference foe, East Tennessee State University which is 532 miles from campus.
About Northern Kentucky:Â The Norse will be home for only the third time this season when they host North Florida. Northern Kentucky snapped a six game losing streak on Wednesday night, defeating Eastern Kentucky, 13-11 in 11 innings. The Norse picked up a pair of wins over Georgia State and took a game in the season opening series against Troy. In their first season of play in the Atlantic Sun last season, the Norse were 3-27 in conference play and finished with an overall record of 8-47. Northern Kentucky is in the midst of reclassifying to Division I and is not eligible for postseason play.
Series History:Â Prior to each school making the jump to Division I, both schools met in 1992 where the Ospreys emerged victorious, 8-1. Last year in Jacksonville, North Florida came away with the series sweep. Game two of the series went 13 innings and ended when relief pitcher Jamie Cardwell was called on to hit with two outs in the inning. Cardwell delivered a RBI single to left for the walk-off victory. The Ospreys have won all four previous meetings with the Norse.
Record-breaking Streak:Â Junior Drew Weeks entered his name into the UNF record books on Wednesday night with a double to right field. It marked the 28th consecutive game with a base hit, breaking the school's Division I record of 27 set by former teammate Tyler Marincov in 2013. He is now zeroing in on the overall school mark which is 29 held by Kyle Caltrett.
Doing it All:Â Sophomore Corbin Olmstead has embraced his role of the Ospreys' primary designated hitter of late. He is now second on the team with a .341 batting average and has put forth multiple-hit efforts in five of the last six games. He provided the Ospreys with a series-clinching, walk-off single against USC Upstate last Sunday while also pitching six innings in relief to earn the victory. He is second on the team in home runs and RBIs in just 41 plate appearances.
Early Conference Implications: The Ospreys are one of three teams that sit atop the Atlantic Sun with a 2-1 record. Mercer and Lipscomb share the lead with North Florida. Mercer will square off against Jacksonville this weekend while Lipscomb will visit Kennesaw State in the early race for first place.
Offensive and Defensive Leaders:Â After a sluggish start at the plate, North Florida currently ranks second in the Atlantic Sun with a .289 batting average. Last year the Ospreys were one of the top offenses in the country with a .316 cumulative batting average. Despite a season-high four errors against Bethune-Cookman on Tuesday North Florida still boasts a league-best .973 fielding percentage. The Ospreys have committed a league-low 21 errors this season.
National Ranks:Â Coming into this week's games, junior Drew Weeks was ranked 15th in the country in batting average. He is the only player in the Atlantic Sun with an average over .400 and leads the league with 35 hits.
