TROY, Ala. – University of North Florida softball picked up two wins on Day Two of the Troy Subway Invitational on Saturday at the Troy Sportsplex. The Ospreys began the day with a 6-1 win over Northwestern State and then had a 2-0 shutout of Middle Tennessee.
"We had great pitching, made several great defensive plays and our bats were good all day," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "We played with more confidence today."
In Game One, Northwestern State got out to a 1-0 lead with a Cassandra Barefield lead-off homer in the bottom of the second. The Ospreys answered with a two-run top of the third to take the lead. Mariah Reynolds and Marissa Thomas had back-to-back RBI singles with Lexi Taylor scoring on Reynolds hit and Kelly Wilson scoring on Thomas'.
Ashia Kerr hit her first collegiate home run with a lead-off shot down the right field line to start the fourth inning and put UNF up 3-1.
The Ospreys got their last three runs in the seventh inning. With one out and runners in scoring position, Reynolds ripped a triple down the right field line and drove in Taylor and Wilson to make it 5-1. An infield single by Thomas in the next at-bat allowed Reynolds to score what would ultimately be the game's final run.
Kayla Goff pitched all 7.0 innings, struck out five batters and allowed one earned run off four hits en route to getting the win.
Skylar Cagle was credited with the loss after allowing three earned runs off six hits in 3.0 innings. Cagle had three strikeouts.
Reynolds, Thomas and Ashley Holton were all 2-for-4 from the plate. Reynolds and Thomas added three and two RBI, respectively.
In the Ospreys' second game of the day against Middle Tennessee, the first inning was all the difference. With the bases loaded, Kerr drilled a two-out single up the middle, bringing home Danica Mandarano and Reynolds for the game's only runs.
Cortney Radke fanned eight batters and allowed only two hits in 7.0 innings of work in order to pick up her second win of the season.
Shelby Stinnett had the loss after throwing all 6.0 innings for the Blue Raiders. Stinnett struck out four and allowed no earned runs off five hits.
