Out of the Box
Near Upset: In a series that has had a flair for the dramatic over the past few years, No. 20 Florida handed the Ospreys an, 8-7 loss in Gainesville on Wednesday night. The Ospreys out-hit the Gators in the upset bid but Florida scored the game's final three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. The Ospreys held the lead twice, 4-0 at the end of the second inning and 7-5 in the top of the eighth.
Taming the Gators: In recent years, the Ospreys have given the Gators trouble. As the No. 29 team last season, Florida dropped a 7-6 decision in extra innings to the Ospreys. Two of the last three games against the Gators have gone extra innings and the Ospreys are only two seasons removed from taking down Florida when they were the top-ranked team in the country.
Big Higgy Style: Junior transfer Trent Higginbothem hit two doubles in Wednesday's battle with No. 20 Florida. His bases loaded double in the top of the second brought three runners in and put the Ospreys up, 4-0. He is batting an even .400 and is 6-for-15 in his first four games for UNF.
Starts at the Top: Osprey lead-off man, Kyle Brooks tied a career high with three hits against the Gators. The UNF shortstop went 3-for-5 and scored two of the Ospreys seven runs. It marked his fifth three-hit game in his two seasons with the program.
About the Stags: This weekend's series will mark the first ever meeting between Fairfield and UNF. Friday will also serve as the season opener the Stags and commence a 12-game road trip to start the season. Fairfield returns seven of their nine position starters from a season ago along with the top three pitchers from 2013. The Stags compete in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and finished last season with a 20-29 overall record.
