Strong Finish Propels #WGolf to 7th Place at Amelia Island

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla. -- Saving their best for last, the North Florida women's golf team charged up the leaderboard Tuesday with a final round 296 en route to finishing seventh in the JU Amelia Island Collegiate at Amelia National Golf Club.
The Ospreys final round performance was the lowest score for any of the 14 teams in the field on Tuesday and also marked the second best team round in program history. UNF's final round total was three strokes better than the rest of the field.
North Florida was led by a trio of linksters in the closing round as sophomores Emelie Alpe, Kelly Aylwin and Belinda George each carded scores of one-over 73.
For all three golfers, the final round performance matched or bettered their low round of the season. In addition, it equalled a career best round for both Alpe and George. Alpe was the Osprey's top finisher earning a tie for 20th at 225, while George and Aylwin finished tied for 27th at 228.
Freshmen Lauren Coe (78) and Nathalie Nygren (77) rounded out the UNF lineup in the event posting finishes of tied for 38th and 48th, respectively. Sophomore Mary Rodgers posted a final round 77 to finish tied for 35th (230) competing as an individual.
FIU claimed the team championship with a 54-hole total of 859. Kennesaw State finished second at 871 followed by Daytona State College (890), Jacksonville (894), Winthrop (895), James Madison (904), UNF, Xavier (914), Stetson (914), Jacksonville State (917), Cincinnati (920), Wofford (932), Illinois State (954) and FAU (974).
For the Ospreys, who entered the final round in 10th place, the seventh place showing marked their third consecutive finish in the top half of a tournament field.
North Florida next competes on Mar. 2-4 in the Kiawah Island Classic.
