GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida men's golf team fired their best round of the weekend but were unable to make a final round move finishing 10th at the SunTrust Gator Invitational.
The Ospreys carded a 292 in Sunday's final round at the Mark Bostick Golf Course giving the squad a 54-hole total of 880. Junior MJ Maguire was the team's top performer on the final day shooting a one-under 69.
Sunday's performance allowed Maguire to finish tied for 40th at 221, while fellow junior Parker Jones was the squad's highest finisher claiming a tie for 30th. Jones, a native of Gainesville and a newcomer for UNF this season, carded his best round as an Osprey with a 71 and matched his career best tournament total of 220.
"Today's round really just reflected our play for the whole weekend," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "We had a few decent rounds but the rest of our play was not great golf. We are still early in the spring season and have a lot more golf to play. Hopefully, we can get back on track as we get ready for our home event, The Hayt, next weekend."
Sophomore Taylor Hancock finished tied for 42nd at 222 after posting a final round 77, with junior Joey Petronio shooting a 75 for a three-round 225 (T-53rd). Rounding out the Osprey lineup at the Gator was sophomore Austin Padova in a tie for 60th at 228.
Arkansas boasted a three-round 849 in winning the team championship by six shots. Florida State finished as the runner up at 855 followed by Vanderbilt (858), UCF (863), UAB (868), Mercer (868), Georgia Southern (874), Liberty (874), College of Charleston (877), North Florida, Florida (881), Lamar (886), Coastal Carolina (888) and Jacksonville (909).
North Florida continues its busy month of February by returning to the links on Feb. 23-25 at Sawgrass Country Club, when the Ospreys host their home event, The Hayt.
