LAHAINA, Hawaii -- North Florida senior golfers Joey Petronio and MJ Maguire fired career best rounds Friday to lead the No. 32-ranked Ospreys to second place after round one play of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic.
Petronio finished with 10 birdies en route to an 8-under 63, while Maguire collected seven birdies and an eagle for a 7-under 64. As a team, UNF posted a season best 15-under 269 which also marks the lowest 18-hole score in program history.
"MJ and Joey played very well today," said head coach Scott Schroeder. "We need a couple other guys to play better tomorrow so we can try and challenge Oregon. They are playing extremely well so it will take a big effort to catch up."
Petronio's performance continues his strong fall play and leaves him tied for second in the individual medalist competition, just one shot behind the current leader. Maguire is tied for fifth after the opening round.
Junior Taylor Hancock and redshirt freshman Dillon Woods both carded rounds of even par 71 to rank in a tie for 36th with junior Austin Padova rounding out the team lineup in a tie for 48th after a 1-over 72. Additionally, senior Parker Jones shot a 2-under 70 (T-31st) playing as an individual.
No. 2-ranked Oregon leads the team competition after shooting a 30-under 254 on Friday. UNF is second with Kansas in third at 270 followed by No. 27 Clemson (272) and Gonzaga (274) filling out the Top Five squads. The Ducks' Brandon McIver finished at 9-under 62 to sit atop the medalist list.
