Pack of Top 20 Finishers Help #WXC Finish 2nd at Upstate Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The North Florida women's cross country team saw its top five runners finish among the Top 20 individuals en route to a runner-up showing Saturday in the Upstate Invitational.
The Ospreys posted a score of 42 points behind a trio of Top 10 finishers led by freshman Eden Meyer in second with a time of 17:49.95, marking her second consecutive sub-18 minute 5K performance. Senior Elle Baker finished fourth in a personal best time of 17:55.13 and fellow senior Alessandra Valdes was sixth with her own personal best of 18:07.61.
"Eden Meyer had another outstanding race in leading our team today," said UNF head coach Jeff Pigg. "It was great to see Elle Baker come off being sick early in the season have a very strong run as well as have Alessandra Valdes run the best race of her life. Our women's team still has their best races ahead of them, but it is nice to see us begin to round into shape at this point in the season."
Junior Alexis Irwin was UNF's fourth finisher clocking a time of 18:27.27 (14th) while senior Andelka Tancic was 16th at 18:30.22. North Florida's lineup was completed by freshman Dagmar Olsen at 18:55.88 (27th) and senior Alyssa Brandt inn 18:58.54 (29th).
Georgia Tech claimed the team title with a score of 33 points, just nine ahead of UNF. Appalachian State was third with 55 followed by Southeast Region No.5-ranked Wake Forest at 123, College of Charleston (125), UNC Asheville (182), Western Carolina (224), USC Upstate (266), The Citadel (268), Charleston Southern (294), Winthrop (301), Wofford (369), Presbyterian (393), Brevard (394), Spartanburg Methodist (447), Lees-McRae (484) and Newberry (497).
Appalachian State's Tristin Van Ord finished five seconds in front of Meyer to capture the individual crown.
North Florida will next conclude their regular season race slate on Oct. 17 at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
