SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The North Florida cross country teams look to continue their strong season performances Saturday morning at the Upstate Invitational.
The UNF men, currently ranked 10th in USTFCCCA South Region polls, have already captured a pair of meet victories and are coming off an impressive third-place showing at the Mt. Dew Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Sophomore Michael Damato has led a balanced group of runners having posted the team's best time of of the year with an 8k personal record 24:59.23 in the last outing.
The Ospreys women are also looking to build on a third-place finish at the Mt. Dew Invitational to go along with a team title earlier this season at the 110% Invitational. Freshman Eden Meyer, a native of Jacksonville, owns the squad's fastest 5k time this season at 17:35.81, while senior Andelka Tancic has finished among the Top 10 runners in each of meets this year.
"Practice has been going very well," said UNF head coach Jeff Pigg. "We are looking forward to another challenging competition. There is always a bit of excitement about racing in the team because it is that one opportunity every couple weeks to run at maximum effort. So much of the time with my young teams, my job is to hold them back, so needless to say they are excited about a chance to race. They expect to run fast. Looking forward to a really competitive field including regionally ranked programs like Georgia Tech and Wake Forest along with a few other traditionally good teams."
Participating schools for Saturday's 8k men and 5k women races include UNF and host USC Upstate along with Appalachian State, Brevard, Charleston Southern, The Citadel, College of Charleston, Georgia Tech, Lees-McRae, Newberry, Presbyterian, Spartanburg Methodist, UNC Asheville, Wake Forest, Western Carolina, Winthrop and Wofford.
Georgia Tech currently ranks 7th in the men's USTFCCCA South Region while both of Wake Forest's teams hold rankings in the Southeast Region with the men at No. 11 and the women at No. 5.
Following this weekend's competition, North Florida will run their final regular season race on Oct. 17 at the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
