Damato Paces #MXC to 3rd Place Finish at Upstate Invitational

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- The USTFCCCA South Region No. 10-ranked North Florida men's cross country team continued their strong 2014 campaign earning a third-place finish Saturday at the Upstate Invitational.
Sophomore Michael Damato was again the team's top performer clocking a 25:08.84 over the 8k course layout to earn a third-place individual showing. As a team, UNF finished with 84 points, behind only Wake Forest (No. 11 ranked in the Southeast Region) at 36 and No. 7 South Region ranked Georgia Tech with 54.
"Mike Damato had a very good race upfront for us," said UNF head coach Jeff Pigg. "Overall we felt like we competed well. Our pack was good with just a small gap between our first and fifth place finishers. It was a good weekend for the UNF men."
A quartet of Osprey harriers finished less than a minute behind Damato's strong showing to give UNF five scoring runners in the Top 30. Freshman Tyler Bennett headed the pack in a time of 25:38.99 to finish 15th while fellow freshman Nick Morken was 17th at 25:42.90.
Sophomore Brad Hort ran a time of 25:46.11 in finishing 23rd and senior Jacob Fuller posted a personal best 25:51.83 as UNF's fifth runner in 26th. The Ospreys lineup was rounded out by junior Jeremy Bryan in 33rd (26:27.89) and freshman Tyler Stahl in 34th (26:28.67).
Wake Forest captured the team crown ahead of Georgia Tech and UNF. Appalachian State finished fourth at 91 followed by Western Carolina (175), College of Charleston (192), Winthrop (206), USC Upstate (206), UNC Asheville (206), The Citadel (281), Newberry (382), Lees-McRae (393), Wofford (407), Charleston Southern (430), Pesbyterian (446).
Georgia Tech's Jeremy Greenwald was the top individual finisher in a time of 24:58.52 with Wake Forest's Kent Garrett (25:08.32) edged Damato at the tape by a half a second.
North Florida will have two weeks off before concluding their regular season schedule at the Crimson Classic on Oct. 17 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
