JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Despite a flurry of shots allowed in the second half of play, Lipscomb (8-3-1, 2-1-1 A-Sun) escaped Hodges Stadium with a 1-0 victory over the North Florida men's soccer team this evening. The Ospreys even their overall record to 5-5 on the season and are now 2-2 against conference opponents.
Â
Lipscomb netted the game's only goal in the 56th minute on Reece Holcombe's second tally of the season. He was delivered a pretty pass from Matt Kerridge that nestled right between two Osprey defenders. Holcombe was able to complete the run and beat goalkeeper Kyle Nasta to the right side of the net.
Â
The goal ended a string of dominance for the Osprey defense that had not yielded a score in over 242 minutes of action. Coming into the contest the North Florida back line had pitched consecutive shutouts against conference opponents for the second-straight season.
Â
"Lipscomb is a quality opponent and we knew it was going to be a 90 minute battle," said Head Coach Derek Marinatos. "I think we came out in the second half and settled down a bit, created a couple chances in the second half but ultimately we weren't able to take advantage."
Â
The Ospreys came out on a mission in the second half, out-shooting the Bisons by a total of 12-1. North Florida was awarded five corner kicks compared to zero by Lipscomb in the final 45 minutes. Perhaps the best chance came in the 66th minute when a sequence of three Osprey shots nearly knotted the game up at one. The Lipscomb defense cleared a ball off the line and Camilo Garcia had a header ring off the left post.
Â
Nasta put forth another solid effort in goal for the Ospreys and was credited with two saves in the loss. He made a diving save in the first half off very dangerous Bisons chance to keep the first half scoreless. His counterpart, Nate Davis made three saves for Lipscomb to earn his sixth win of the year.
Â
North Florida will hit the road next Friday when they travel to first-place, Florida Gulf Coast. Last year the Ospreys upset the top-seeded Eagles in the Atlantic Sun playoffs. The rematch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. in Fort Myers.
