JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida women's golf team capped off their fall tournament schedule Tuesday earning a third-place finish in the JU Classic held at Marsh Landing Country Club.
The Ospreys posted a final round 304 to conclude the 54-hole event with a total of 899, marking the second lowest team tournament total in program history. Tuesday's 18 holes concluded a stretch in which UNF played 6 rounds (108 holes) in five days at two tournaments.
"I am very proud of the team for ending the fall season on a strong note," said UNF head coach Joanne Berglund. "They put together two great tournaments back-to-back, which is tough to do when playing six competitive rounds in five days. Nathalie and Emelie continue to play very strong and both have worked hard and are starting to reap the results of that work."
Sophomore Nathalie Nygren finished off her strong fall play earning her second consecutive Top 10 finish, shooting an even-par 72 en route to tying for 6th with a career-best 54 hole total of 220. Nygren was joined in the Top 10 by junior teammate Emelie Alpe, who also carded a final round 72 and finished tied for 6th at 220.Â
The remainder of UNF's lineup finished the final round with matching scores of 80. Junior transfer Mary Dawson earned her second straight Top 25 listing after finishing tied for 24th at 228, while junior Kelly Aylwin tied for 34th at 231. Junior Belinda George ended the event tied for 63rd at 242.
A pair of Osprey golfers competed as individuals led by sophomore Megan Wilshire's Top 20 finish. Wilshire fired a career best three-round total of 225 including a final round 76 and highlighted by her first career under-par round (71) on Monday afternoon. Freshman Meghan Bennett wrapped up UNF's competitor list finishing tied for 46th at 234 after an 81 on Tuesday.
Coastal Carolina captured the team championship with a score of 874 while Troy was the runner-up at 897. UNF finished third followed by Daytona State (900) and Charleston Southern (908) in the Top Five. CCU's Marissa Hinchman claimed the individual medalist title with a 3-under par 213.
"I believe we grew a lot this semester and have a great understanding of what we need to work on before we compete again in February," added Berglund. "It was nice to have all the players see tournament time this fall and with Lauren Coe returning in the spring, we will have even greater depth. I look forward to the players pushing one another daily to make the top five travel team for each tournament."
North Florida has completed its fall tournament schedule and will be off from competition until meeting crosstown rival Jacksonville in the annual Hughes Cup match at TPC Sawgrass on Feb. 9, 2015. UNF's next tournament play will be Feb. 23-24 in the Amelia Island Collegiate.
