Â
Boiling Springs, N.C. – The University of North Florida Women's soccer team battled Gardner-Webb to a 1-1 double overtime draw on Friday night in Boiling Springs. Â
Â
"It was good to get the first regular season match under our belt," said head coach Linda Hamilton. "We definitely had many opportunities at the goal but we just needed to capitalize on them."
Â
North Florida was first on the board when they scored from an own goal in the first six minutes of play. Much of the first half was controlled by the Ospreys, outshooting the Bulldogs 6-2.
Â
The Bulldogs were able to come out of halftime to tie the match in the 49th minute on a goal from Shelby Hooe off of an assist by Meagan Reynolds. In the 75th minute, the Ospreys threated to regain the lead after a shot from senior Lauren Hopfensperger which just sailed right of the goal.
Â
The offensive pressure continued for UNF, tallying four overtime shots to GWU's one, but were still unable to find the back of the net. The Bulldogs were able to thwart the Ospreys' final attempt as a last-second shot in the second overtime was deflected by the Gardner-Webb goalie.
Â
The Ospreys finished the match with 17 shots including 11 shots on goal. Senior Carolina Lencina led the way for the Ospreys with three shots and Thea Linkfield, Alexis Bredeau, Alexi Zaremba and Alex Herman recorded two shots apiece. Shelby Hooe and Meagan Reynolds each recorded two shots for the Bulldogs.
Â
Freshman goalie Susie Ford had three saves for the Ospreys and her counterpart Amy Schmitt had eight on the night.
Â
"We did some good things tonight, but we know we have to work on finishing strong," Hamilton said.
Â
The Ospreys are back in action on Sunday afternoon, as they as they travel to Charleston, S.C. to take on College of Charleston in a 12:00 p.m. match. Links to live stats will be available at UNFOspreys.com.
