JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's soccer team kicks off the 2013 season with road trips to Gardner-Webb and College of Charleston this weekend. The Ospreys open the season on Friday, Aug. 23 against the Bulldogs at 7:00 p.m. before concluding the weekend on Sunday, Aug. 25 with a noon match versus the Cougars.
Â
This past weekend, the Ospreys played in an exhibition match at Embry-Riddle which resulted in a 0-0 draw. Freshman goalie, Susie Ford, recorded four saves to earn the shutout.
Â
The Ospreys welcome nine freshmen to the team and return 18 letterwinners, including eight of last year's starters. The Ospreys come off an 8-10-2 season in 2012; including a 5-3-1 record in the Atlantic Sun. UNF has advanced to the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament for the second consecutive year.
Â
Gardner-Webb (Fri. Aug. 23, 7 p.m.) enters the match with a 1-1 draw with USC Upstate. North Florida has a 3-0-1 all-time record against the Bulldogs. In the last contest with Gardner-Webb in 2007, the Ospreys claimed a 2-1 victory in Boiling Springs. The Bulldogs are led by sophomore midfielder Samantha Gutierrez, who was selected to the All-Big South Second Team.
Â
College of Charleston (Sun. Aug. 25, 12 p.m.) finished seventh last season in the Southern Conference but advanced to the semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. This year the Cougars join the Colonial Athletic Association. The Cougars return both leading scorers, junior Sarah Cardamone and senior McCallie Jones. The Ospreys have played the Cougars twice with each team claiming a victory.
Â
After these matches, the Ospreys continue their 2013 campaign on the road. North Florida's home opener is on Friday, Sept. 13, when the Ospreys host the North Florida Invitational at Hodges Stadium.
