SunTrust River City Rumble
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Although still playing in the River City, University of North Florida plays its first away weekend series in five weeks with the quick trip over to cross-town rival Jacksonville for a three-game Atlantic Sun series and the SunTrust River City Rumble.
"This is a huge weekend series, playing our cross-town rival," said head coach Marcie Hickey. "The JU series has always been intense and I expect three, hard-fought games this weekend. The team has shown mental toughness throughout the season. There is a little bit more on the line, but the team knows what they are capable of and this is just like any other series. We have to take it one game at a time."
Two things will be at stake with the weekend series. One will be barrel points for the SunTrust River City Rumble. The second is a berth to the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
UNF enters the weekend with an 8.5-6.5 lead in the SunTrust River City Rumble standings and only needs three barrel points to secure the Olde Wooden Barrel for a second year. In addition to softball's three-game series, points will also be up for grabs in baseball's three-game series that also takes place this weekend at Jacksonville.
Meanwhile, if the Ospreys win at least one of this weekend's three games, they will secure their first-ever berth to the Atlantic Sun Tournament. UNF has a 14-6 record in conference play this season and is currently second in the A-Sun standings. However, each game has to count as three wins separate second (UNF) and seventh (JU at 11-12).
After no mid-week games due to exams, UNF was last in action with its series against Northern Kentucky last weekend, taking two of three games from the Norse. The series was bookend by extra-inning games. The Ospreys won the first game of the series 3-2 when Marissa Thomas' walk-off hit in the eighth inning drove in Kelly Wilson. However, Northern Kentucky avoided a series sweep with a 4-3 win in eight innings in the series finale on Sunday.
Jacksonville has hit a nine-game slump that has resulted in dropping three key Atlantic Sun series, including a 3-1 Wednesday evening contest to Stetson. However, the Dolphins have spent much of the last month on the road and have not hosted a weekend home conference series since Mar. 22-23 against USC Upstate in a rain-shortened series. Postseason hopes are also at stake for Jacksonville. The Dolphins need to either sweep or go 2-1 against UNF and get help from several other conference teams in order to stay alive in the postseason hunt. Sarah Simon enters the weekend leading Jacksonville with a team-best .388 batting average, 16 home runs and 42 RBI.
UNF holds an 8-6 advantage in the all-time series, but Jacksonville has swept each of the last two series. Last year, the Dolphins took the doubleheader with a 4-2 Game One win and a 5-1 victory in Game Two at the UNF Softball Complex on Apr. 20, 2012. UNF has not defeated the Dolphins since a 2-1 win on Apr. 6, 2010 at the UNF Softball Complex.
The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday and concludes with a single game on Sunday. First pitch for Saturday's doubleheader is set for 1 p.m., at the JU Softball Complex. Admission is free.
