Men's Golf Starts Strong at ASun Championship

BRASELTON, Ga. – The No. 17 North Florida men's golf team took the lead Sunday at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship following an opening round one-over-par 289 at the Legends Course of Chateau Elan Resort.
The Ospreys, the defending conference champions, saw all five players in their lineup end day one ranked in the Top 15 individuals. Seniors Sean Dale and Kevin Phelan led the way with matching one-under scores of 71.
Sophomores Joey Petronio and MJ Maguire joined the senior duo in the top 10 posting rounds of 72 and 75, respectively. Petronio is currently tied for fifth while Maguire sits in a tie for 10th. Freshman Austin Padova rounded out the UNF lineup with a first round 76, placing him tied for 15th.
UNF owns a nine-shot advantage over second ranked Kennesaw State at 298. ETSU and Jacksonville are tied for third at 301 followed by Mercer (308), USC Upstate (308), Stetson (309), Florida Gulf Coast (313), Northern Kentucky (314) and Lipscomb (314).
Dale and Phelan share the individual medalist lead after 18 holes of play with KSU's Austin Vick and Scott Gibson of ETSU.
Second round play at the Atlantic Sun Championship is slated for Monday with North Florida paired with the Owls and Bucs off of the first tee beginning at 8:50 a.m.
