Softball Wins Game One, Falls in Game Two in A-Sun Opener With USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – University of North Florida softball started its three-game Atlantic Sun series at USC Upstate with a doubleheader split on Saturday at Cyrill Stadium. UNF captured Game One 1-0, while the Spartans took Game Two 5-0.
UNF's run in the top of the first was all that the Ospreys needed in Game One. Ashley Holton's two-out RBI single to center field brought home Shay Richardson from second for the game's only run.
Kaylie Wallace struck out three en route to pitching all 7.0 innings for the complete game shutout and the win. Wallace allowed six hits, but did not give up a walk.
Hannah Alexander fanned seven batters, but allowed one run off six hits in the 7.0 inning loss.
Kelly Wilson was the only batter from either team to register multiple hits. Wilson was 2-for-3 from the plate, singling in both the second and the sixth innings.
In Game Two, UNF and USC Upstate played through five-and-a-half scoreless innings before the Spartans had a four-run sixth inning to break a 0-0 tie.
With runners on the corners, an Osprey fielding error brought in Meredith Barnes to make it 1-0 and move runners to second and third. Shellie Robinson put the Spartans up 2-0 on a Cheyenne Griffin hit. Jessica Ujvari doubled the Spartans' runs total with a two-run hit, while a Kendall Settlemyre hit to right center drove in Erin Schattle and put USC Upstate up 5-0.
Kayla Goff was credited with the loss after allowing four runs – three earned – off five hits in 5.1 innings. She also struck out five.
Jamie Ujvari fanned nine batter and limited UNF to just three hits in the 7.0 innings for the complete shutout.
Holton was 2-for-3 from the plate in Game Two for the Ospreys, while seven different Spartans each registered one hit.
The series concludes on Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m., from Cyrill Stadium.
