Softball Falls on Sunday, Drops Series to USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – A pair of six-run innings by USC Upstate in the second and the third doomed University of North Florida softball on Sunday afternoon as the Spartans shutout the Ospreys 13-0 in five innings at Cyrill Stadium.

UNF had a tough time generating any offense, only getting Marissa Thomas and Lexi Taylor to base off of walks and Kelly Wilson on during a fielder's choice.

USC Upstate used three doubles to drive in five of its six runs in the second inning. Ericka Harris and Shellie Robinson each had a two-run double, while Kendall Settlemyre brought home one run with her double.

The Spartans added to their lead in the third. Maddison Kieffer got home on a Settlemyre single to left field. USC Upstate then capitalized on an Osprey error and went up 8-0 with Harris scoring. Then with two outs, Robinson sent a grand slam over the left field wall to make it a 12-0 game.

USC Upstate's final run came off a Kieffer lead-off homer to center field in the fourth inning.

Kaylie Wallace had the loss. In 2.0 innings of work, Wallace allowed four runs off four hits and only struck out one.

Jamie Ujvari struck out seven and did not allow a hit in the 5.0 inning win.

Both Kieffer and Harris were 3-for-3 from the plate, while Robinson was 2-for-3 with six RBI.

UNF returns to action on Wednesday with a mid-week doubleheader against FIU at the UNF Softball Complex. First pitch of the twinbill is set for 3 p.m. Admission to all home UNF softball games is free.
