JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – University of North Florida softball fell 7-4 to Florida A&M on Tuesday evening at the UNF Softball Complex after committing three costly errors and a three-run seventh inning by the Lady Rattlers.
UNF started out with a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Jackie Reese got the game's first run as Mariah Reynolds sent a hit to center field. With Stephanie McAdam pinch running for Reynolds, another single to center field, this time by Ashley Holton, brought home McAdam from second and gave UNF the two-run advantage.
The Ospreys' run was short-lived as Florida A&M capitalized on back-to-back UNF errors. A fielding error resulted in runners at the corners. Then, in an attempt to prevent a stolen base, another Osprey error occurred and allowed Kieifi Myrick score and move Arianna Stewart to third. A Bianca Torres two-out hit to center field brought in Stewart for the game-tying run.
UNF and the Lady Rattlers remained tied until the fifth. With one out, Reynolds scored when Holton's hit ricocheted off Florida A&M pitcher Jennifer Lindsey's foot to put the Ospreys up 3-2.
Florida A&M answered in the sixth to go up 4-3. Stewart sent a two-run double to right field that gave the Lady Rattlers a slim, one-run lead.
UNF quickly responded as well, evening the game at 4-4 in the bottom half of the sixth. Reese drove Abby Tewey home with a deep double to left field to force another tie.
However, Florida A&M continued with its rally in the seventh, picking up the game's final three runs. Florida A&M quickly capitalized on UNF's third error of the game, scoring Ashley Shepherd to go up. 5-4. An RBI single from Robbielyn Roberson and a Myrick double brought in the Lady Rattlers' last two runs in order take the 7-4 lead.
Kaylie Wallace was credited with the loss. In 2.1 innings, she allowed four runs – two earned – off four hits and struck out four.
Ashley Minter had the win after coming in relief. Also pitching 2.1 innings, Minter allowed one run off four hits. She did not have a strikeout.
Reese was 3-for-4 with one run and one RBI, while Holton was 3-for-4 with two RBI.
Stewart went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBI.
