Baseball Hosts Lafayette in Final Nonconference Weekend Series

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team returns home for a three-game nonconference weekend series against Lafayette at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium. The series begins on Friday, March 15 at 6:00 p.m. and continues on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The series concludes on Sunday with a game starting at 12:00 p.m.
North Florida enters the weekend with a 12-6 overall record. The Ospreys are currently 8-3 at Harmon Stadium on the season. Lafayette is 2-10 this season and has not played a home game this season. The Leopards are 2-9 in true road games and 0-1 in their lone neutral site game.
The games between the two teams will mark the first meeting between the Ospreys and the Leopards.
Earlier this week, Tyler Marincov was named Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week by the league office. The honor is the first of the year for the junior and the second of the outfielder's career. In addition, the junior was named CollegeBaseballInsider.com Louisville Slugger Southeast Player of the Week.
Marincov led the team with a .421 batting average on the week and a 1.053 slugging percentage. He finished the week 8-for-19 with a double, a triple, three home runs, eight runs scored and 10 RBI. Marincov had home runs in three consecutive games on the week. He also added a sacrifice fly and a stolen base. The junior posted four multiple-hit games on the week with an extra base hit in each game. On the week, he was perfect in the field on five chances.
North Florida heads into the weekend after splitting a pair of games with Savannah State. The Ospreys used 11 hits and benefited from a school-record 16 walks to score 18 runs in the midweek opener to defeat the Tigers 18-4 at Harmon Stadium. In the second game, UNF dropped a 4-1 road game. The Ospreys committed three errors that lead to four unearned runs during the game.
Heading into the weekend, four Atlantic Sun Conference teams are collectively batting over .300 for the season after one month of play – North Florida (.310), Florida Gulf Coast (.306), USC Upstate (.306) and East Tennessee State (.305). Last season, only one team reached the mark for the year; Mercer (.302).
The A-Sun owns the 10th best nonconference winning percentage among the 31 NCAA Conferences at 54.27 percent. The Atlantic Sun owns a .500 or better against 12 of the 21 conferences it has faced so far this season.
In the latest WarrenNolan.com RPI release, two teams from the A-Sun appeared in the top-25 – Mercer (22) and North Florida (25).
Scouting the Opposition:
Lafayette College enters the weekend having played all 12 of its games entering the weekend away from home. The Leopards are not scheduled to play a home game until Saturday, March 23.
The Leopards enter the weekend with a team batting average of .235 and a combined earned run average of 7.23. The Ospreys are batting .310 as a team with a 3.34 ERA.
Fun Fact: Tampa Bay Rays Manager Joe Maddon is a former member of the Lafayette Leopard baseball team.
