
Men's Golf Set to Host Hayt Invitational

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The North Florida men's golf team welcomes a collection of top-ranked golf programs for the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational beginning Sunday at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Ospreys, ranked No. 29 by Golfweek, are coming off a runner-up finish at the recent SunTrust Gator Invitational. A trio of linksters including seniors Sean Dale and Kevin Phelan and led by sophomore MJ Maguire collected top five individual finishes at the event.
The Hayt Collegiate Invitational, UNF's annual spring event, is a three-game, 54-hole competition featuring a field of 15 teams. This year's includes 11 teams ranked in Golfweek's Top 50 highlighted by four Top 20 squads. Joining the Ospreys for this year's event are No. 7 Florida, No. 9 Duke, No. 12 LSU, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 26 Tennessee, No. 32 Tulsa, No. 37 North Texas, No. 46 Coastal Carolina, No. 47 Ole Miss, No. 49 UCF, UAB, Mercer, Jacksonville and Furman.
“We are looking forward to playing in our home event,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “Sawgrass Country Club is in great shape and will be a good test. This year's field is really good and filled with top ranked schools. It will give us an idea about how good we are at this point in the season.”
North Florida has claimed the team championship twice at the event with the last title coming in 2010. UNF has also finished runner-up three times. Dale, Phelan and Maguire will represent the Ospreys at this year's tournament along with sophomore Joey Petronio and redshirt freshman Taylor Hancock. In addition, UNF's Taylor Johnson, Pete Kellerman, Joey Marino, Austin Padova and Joe Stepnes will all participate as individuals in the event.
The event, in its 22nd year, began in1992 as the Queen's Harbour Intercollegiate and was also played as the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship until 2000 when it was renamed the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational. This year's tournament will be played on Sawgrass Oceanside course (East-West) on a par 72, 7,001-yard layout.
Tee times are scheduled between 8-10 a.m. on each of the three days. The event is free and open to the public. Fans can also follow live scoring at UNFOspreys.com or Golfstat.com.
