JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida basketball team never trailed and treated fans to a showcase of dunks en route to a 90-68 victory over Edward Waters, Monday at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys (5-4) placed four players in double digits led by senior Travis Wallace with 20. Wallace becomes the first UNF player this season to reach the 20-point mark in a game. Freshman Chris Davenport recorded his second career double-double finishing with 12 points and 11 rebounds while fellow freshmen Sean Brennan and Dallas Moore added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Edward Waters was led by a pair of players with over 20 points including Antonio Valiente (23) and Odayne Clark (21).
"I was proud of the contributions we got from everybody on the team tonight," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "I thought we really played unselfish and shared the ball well. It is always nice to get a win and especially one at home. We worked on some thing and looked at some groupings in preparation of our upcoming road trip. Overall it was a good team effort."
UNF scored the first basket of the game and never trailed in the contest. After a couple of ties in the first few minutes of play, the Ospreys used a 10-0 run midway through the opening half to build a 20-8 lead. The Tigers would trim their deficit to six points on a few possessions but would get no closer as North Florida carried a 40-30 lead into the halftime break.
A 10-4 spurt to start the second half extended the Ospreys' lead to 16 at 50-34 just four minutes into play. UNF continued to slowly build on their advantage, eventually leading by as much as 25 (90-65) following a dunk by Demarcus Daniels with just under a minute remaining.
For the game, UNF shot 56 percent including a blistering 63 percent in the second half. Both teams struggled from long distance as EWC made just 3 of 19 attempts (15.8 percent) and North Florida was only 4 of 16 (25 percent). Led by Davenport, the Ospreys held a 39-30 advantage on the glass. Davenport also paced UNF handing out five of the squad's 17 assists in the contest.
North Florida plays its next three games on the road against BCS conference foes beginning Wednesday night at Alabama. The Ospreys will also visit Indiana on Saturday (Dec. 7) before closing the stretch at No. 1 Michigan State on Dec. 17.
