BURLINGTON, Vt. – University of North Florida women's basketball travels outside the state of Florida for the first time this season, venturing to the University of Vermont for the two-day TD Bank Classic. The Ospreys open the tournament against host Vermont on Friday night at 7 p.m., and then face either Green Bay or Siena on Saturday.
Â
"We're just really excited to have the opportunity to play in a tournament with three quality teams that each have different styles of play, which will help us in conference," said head coach Mary Tappmeyer. "It will be a big physical and mental challenge for us playing back-to-back."
Â
UNF looks for its first road win of the season. Both of the Ospreys' wins in 2013-14 have come at UNF Arena, including Monday's 62-44 win over Samford. In its last road contest, UNF dropped a tough 88-77 game at Florida on Nov. 10. Since the game against the Gators, UNF's averaged 71.7 points in the last three games. Destinee Smith has scored 10+ points in each of UNF's four games this season and enters the weekend averaging a team-best 13.3 points per game.
Â
Tappmeyer is closing in on two benchmarks, including one that could be met this weekend. As the only coach in UNF history, Tappmeyer is just two wins away from her's and the program's 300th victory. Tappmeyer has guided the Ospreys to 298 wins in 22 years.
Â
Vermont returns to the hardwood for the first time in a week-and-a-half. The Catamounts, who search for their first win of the season, have not been in action since suffering a 66-62 setback at Dartmouth on Nov. 11. The TD Classic is also Vermont's home-opener. Niki Taylor and Kristina White have come off the bench in Vermont's first two games in order to average 17.5 and 15.5 points per game. Taylor's also pulled down a team-best 7.0 rebounds per game.
Â
Friday's game will be the second meeting between UNF and Vermont with the Ospreys holding a 1-0 lead in the series. Last season, UNF emerged with a 64-61 victory on Nov. 24, 2012 at UNF Arena.
Â
The outcome of Friday's game determines who and when the Ospreys play on Saturday. Should UNF win, it will face the winner of Green Bay-Siena in the Championship Game at 7 p.m. Should UNF lose, it will face the loser of Green Bay-Siena in the Consolation Game at 5 p.m. UNF has never played Green Bay nor Siena.
Â
Green Bay has started the season at 2-1 and continues with its northeast road swing. The Phoenix come off a 68-60 win at Duquesne last Sunday and play in the Maine Thanksgiving Tournament next weekend. Kaili Lukan and Tesha Buck average 11.3 and 10.3 points per game, respectively, while Breannah Ranger's grabbing 8.3 rebounds per game.
Â
Siena's off to a 1-1 start to the season and comes off an 82-58 win at Fairleigh Dickinson. Both Clara Sole Anglada and Meghan Donohue enter the tournament averaging 10.5 points per gram. Sole Anglada's also made five blocks and five steals in two games. Meanwhile, Tehresa Coles averages 8.0 rebounds per game.
