JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The North Florida basketball team set Division I program records for points scored and margin of victory in Thursday night's, 109-64, win over Webber International at UNF Arena.
The Ospreys upped their season record to 3-3 after topping the century mark for just the second time in the program's ninth year of Division I play, while the 45-point victory was the team's largest of this era.
UNF's only other triple digit performance in Division I play was the 100 points scored against Edward Waters in the season opener last season. The victory margin topped the previous mark of 37 points in a 90-53 win over Florida A&M on Dec. 21, 2011.
All 11 players on the Osprey roster scored at least five points and collected a rebound. Redshirt freshman Aaron Bodager led five players in double figues finishing with a career-best 18 points including five three-pointers. Freshman Sean Brennan went 4-for-4 from long distance and scored 14 points in his collegiate debut. Romelo Banks (14), Beau Beech (12) and Dallas Moore (12) rounded out the group in double digits.
Sean Jowers finished with 18 points to pace the Warriors on offense.
"This was truly a complete team performance," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "I'm excited for all the guys especially a few that had their first real opportunity in game situations. I felt like tonight's game was a good win for our program in a variety of ways. I'm proud of the way Aaron and Sean have approached their game preparation and were able to step in the game and do the things they do. We had plans to work on several areas tonight and I felt like we were able to do those things. We still need to keep getting better every day."
The Ospreys raced out of the gates grabbing an 8-1 lead just over three minutes into the contest. Chris Davenport got things started with the first of the team's 10 dunks on the night, while Jalen Nesbitt drilled one of the squad's 15 three-pointers to cap the spurt. WIU responded with seven straight points of its own to knot the score at 8 just before the first media timeout, and actually held a slim two-point advantage following a three-pointer by Jowers with 14:12 left.
After trading treys, North Florida used a 21-3 surge over the next 10 minutes of play to build a lead they would not relinquish. The Ospreys held a 51-30 lead at the break after shooting 58 percent from the floor and hitting seven three-pointers.
UNF continued to widen the gap for much of the second half and eventually pushed in front by 40 midway through the period. Another Davenport dunk marked the team's 100th point followed by a Bodager trey that established the new point record with 1:45 remaining in the game.
For the game, UNF blistered the nets at a 61.3 percent clip including going 15-for-30 from beyond the arc. In addition, the Ospreys topped 80 percent from the free throw line for the second consecutive game making 18 of 22 chances. UNF dominated the glass, posting a 49-26 advantage and also handed out a season-high 26 assists led by six from Brennan.
North Florida will now play five of its next six games on the road beginning with a rematch against Savannah State on Tuesday (Nov. 26) in Savannah. The Ospreys handed the Tigers a 66-63 loss in UNF Arena on last Monday night.
