SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Freshman Dallas Moore scored a team-high 18 points including 7-for-7 from the free throw line as North Florida earned a season sweep over Savannah State with a 65-61 victory at Tiger Arena on Tuesday night.
The Ospreys (4-3) earned their third consecutive win and made history by becoming the first road team to earn a win in the 16-game all-time series against the Tigers (2-7). UNF edged the SSU, 66-63, last Monday in Jacksonville.
In addition to Moore's play, seniors Travis Wallace and Charles McRoy both reached double figures finishing with 17 and 10, respectively.
Hikeem Champaigne scored 13 points in leading the Tiger offense.
"This was a huge road win for us," said UNF head coach Matthew Driscoll. "I felt like we really guarded well especially in the first half. The guys again demonstrated their resilence and competitiveness which we've shown all season. I was proud of how we fought hard all game long. I thought one key was our ability to make clutch shots and free throws. We continue to work hard and focus on getting better."
The Ospreys got out to an early 16-10 lead, getting baskets from five different players. Freshman Chris Davenport got the offense started throwing down a pair of monster dunks. UNFpushed their lead to double digits, 24-13, with just under eight minutes left in the half.
The Tigers responded by outscoring UNF, 13-3, over the next five minutes to pull within a point at 27-26. However, North Florida scored the final nine points of the period to hold a 36-26 lead at the half.
Savannah State raced out of the break trimming the Osprey lead to three points after a 9-2 spurt. The Ospreys would extend their lead back to seven before another SSU rally closed it to within two. The Tigers kept it a one possession game for several minutes but were unable to ever knot the score or take a lead.
SSU were within two points, 63-61, with 15 seconds left but free throws by Wallace and McRoy sandwiched around a missed three-point attempt by the Tigers ran out the clock allowing the Ospreys to secure the road victory.
North Florida continues its road trip with a game at No. 8 Ohio State on Friday.
