WINDERMERE, Fla. -- The North Florida men's golf team moved from 12th to eighth place after firing a season best 285 in second round action Monday at the Isleworth Collegiate Invitational.
The Ospreys three-under-par performance vaulted them into the Top 10 with a 36-hole total of 581. Junior All-American MJ Maguire led the charge carding a season low 68 (-4). Maguire's score marked the best individual round of the season for UNF and left him in a tie for 14th (143) with one round to play.
Joining Maguire with an under-par score on Monday was junior teammate Joey Petronio, who shot a one-under 71 for a two round 145 (T27th) total. Sophomore Austin Padova, the Osprey's opening round leader, followed up his under-par opening round with a one-over 73 and is tied for 19th at even par 144.
Redshirt freshman Osten Waite bettered his career low with a one-over 73 in round two and is tied for 47th (149), while sophomore Taylor Hancock rounds out the UNF lineup in a tie for 64th (153) after a second round 74 (+2).
"We played our best of the season today," said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. "Hopefully, we can build on today's performance and back it up with another day of solid play in the final round."
Defending national champion Alabama extended its lead in the team competition, opening up an 11 shot lead on the field with a two-day score of 552. UCF is second at 563 followed by California (570), Illinois (573), UNLV (574), Florida State (576), Vanderbilt (579), UNF, TCU (586), Texas (586), LSU (588), GRU Augusta (589), New Mexico (590), Texas Tech (592) and Arkansas (594).
The Tide also sits atop the medalist standings with Trey Mullinax (134) leading teammate Bobby Wyatt (136) by two strokes.
Tournament action at the Isleworth Invitational concludes with a final round of 18 holes Tuesday. North Florida will be paired with Vandy and TCU beginning play from the first tee at 8 a.m.
