JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Three different Ospreys found the back of the net as the University of North Florida women's soccer team captured their first conference victory of the year, taking down Northern Kentucky 3-0 on Friday night at Patton Park.
"I was very proud of how our team played tonight," said head coach Linda Hamilton. "We really played well on both sides of the field."
Freshman defender Gabrielle Liguori recorded her first collegiate goal, blasting a shot from 18 yards out to give the Ospreys an early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute. NKU saw multiple opportunities at the goal, tallying 15 shots in the first half, including three which hit the post.
The Ospreys came out of the half on the attack, this time outshooting the Norse 16-9 in the final 45 minutes. In the 72nd minute, freshman forward Alexis Bredeau buried a shot from the far right side to extend the Osprey lead 2-0. Less than two minutes later, the Ospreys scored again when senior forward Lauren Hopfensperger found the back of the net after a cross from fellow senior Carolina Lencina.
NKU held a slight advantage in shots for the game, outshooting UNF 24-22. Both teams finished with six corner kicks. Lencina and Bredeau led the Ospreys in shots with four a piece, followed by Thea Linkfield with three. The Norse were led by Katelyn Newton and Allison Ponzer tallying eight and six shots, respectively.
Junior keeper Megan Dorsey collected her second shutout of the year and ninth of her career, in earning the victory. Dorsey made multiple difficult saves in preserving her clean sheet, finishing with eight saves on the night. Â Tanner Ruberg recorded five saves for the Norse.
"I'm glad we were able to capitalize on our shots tonight," said Hamilton. "We would like to use this momentum coming into our next match on Sunday."
The Ospreys return to action on Sunday afternoon, taking on Lipscomb at Patton Park at 1 p.m.Â
