GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida track and field teams turned in another solid performance in Gainesville, earning multiple wins at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational on Sunday.
“I thought this was a really good meet for us,” Head Coach Jeff Pigg said. “We had some people running in some new events today, but everyone went into the meet with something they really wanted to work on and I think we did a great job of that.”
The men had a standout meet, capturing four gold medals to go with a new school record. Freshman Jamal Pitts clocked a 6.64 in the 55m preliminary round to set a new best for UNF.
Three of the first-place finishers came in distance events. Senior Cameron Dickerson won the mile with a time of 4:16.93, while Constantine Fotopoulos earned a first-place finish in the 5000m with a time of 15:11.94.
Sophomore Taylor Sumagpang also took first in the 800m with a 1:57.03, edging out freshman Hunter Sport, who set a new personal best with a 1:57.68. Junior Dante Bouldin also tied his personal record in the 55m hurdles at 7.90, which he set last week on the same track.
The Ospreys 4x400m relay team grabbed the men's final gold medal of the day, as the team of seniors Aaron Tillman and Justin Mims, sophomore Jake Menen and freshman Kyle Crompton finished in 3:21.76 to take the top honors. Junior David Shepherd also grabbed a top-five finish, reaching a height of 4.85m (15-11) to take third place in the pole vault.
On the women's side, the Ospreys performances were highlighted by a gold medal and a new school record from junior Brianna Frazier. Frazier clocked a 7.10 en route to a third place finish in the 55m dash to set a new UNF record before taking first place in the triple jump with a leap of 11.78m (38-7 3/4).
In the mile, a pair of Ospreys set new personal bests. Senior Audrey Maheu clocked a 4:54.32 on her way to runner-up honors, while sophomore Alyssa Brandt finished fourth with a time of 5:06.60.
