CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team could not take advantage of a first-half goal from Kathryne Husted, falling to Charlotte 2-1 in overtime at Transamerica Field on Friday evening.
The Ospreys held Charlotte to just two shots on goal for the game, but turned both into goals, including the game-winner in the second minute of the second overtime period.
“This was a tough one,” Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. “It may have been one where we should have left with a win, but we have to take our lessons from this one and move on to the next one.”
Husted scored the first goal of the match in the 39th minute. After sophomore defender Jennifer Marzi put a corner kick into the area, the ball fell to senior forward Michele Larrinaga, who was able to set up Husted for her second goal of the season and put UNF up 1-0.
At halftime, the Ospreys were in complete control of the match. They had outshot the 49ers 6-2, taken five corner kicks to Charlotte's two and had not conceded a single shot on goal.
However, just six minutes into the second half, Charlotte's Amanda Jones leveled the score with a single header. After Carrie Dail swung a cross in from the right side, Jones nodded a shot just over the outstretched hands of senior Brittany Hahn to tie the score at 1-1.
That scoreline held as time ran out on regulation. After the two 45-minute periods, Jones' goal was still the only shot on goal conceded by the Osprey defense and UNF held a 12-4 advantage in shots.
After no scoring in the first 10-minute period of extra time, Dail notched the game-winner just 1:14 into the second period. Dail fielded Jessica Ryan's through ball in stride and poked the ball past Hahn to seal the victory for the 49ers.
“I thought we played really well, things just didn't fall our way tonight,” Hamilton said. “We competed throughout and that's crucial in a double-overtime game, especially as we get closer to conference play.”
With the loss, UNF falls to 2-5 on the year. Charlotte now sits at 4-2.
The Ospreys are next in action on Sunday afternoon, when they will travel up the road for a 2 p.m. match against Davidson. A link to live stats will be available on UNFOspreys.com.
