Women's Soccer Draws With Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team played cross-town rival Jacksonville to a 1-1 draw on Friday evening at Hodges Stadium.
"It's always good to make sure you're getting a win or a draw at home," Head Coach Linda Hamilton said. "Obviously, we'd rather have the win, but I think we played very well tonight."
Though the match was evenly-matched as a whole, the Ospreys started off the evening very much on the attack, tallying four shots on goal in the first 17 minutes of play.
The offensive pressure continuted for both teams throughout the opening period. In the first half, both teams tallied eight shots and drew , while UNF took five corner kicks. Despite this, neither team had found the back of the net when the halftime whistle blew.
Junior forward Carolina Lencina broke the deadlock in the 60th minute with her fourth goal of the season. Lencina took a pass from fellow junior Thea Linkfield, spun a defender and rifled a shot across the goal that tucked inside the far post to put the Ospreys on top, 1-0.
Both teams had more scoring chances down the stretch, but none produced a goal until the 81st minute, when Jes Cataldo-Ramirez knotted the score at 1-1. Cataldo-Ramirez pounced a rebound from a corner kick and fired a low shot from 25 yards that found the bottom right corner of the net for an equalizer.
In the overtime periods, the Ospreys were constantly in the attacking third, tallying six overtime shots to JU's two and producing a pair of corner kicks, but were not able to find a winner.
Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Beninati made six saves for UNF in the match, while her counterpart from JU, Jill D'Amico recorded eight to maintain the draw.
"We did a lot of very good things tonight," Hamilton said. "I'm proud of this team, but we know we have some things to work on for next weekend."
The match, played in front of a record 1,290 fans, was the fifth consecutive contest between the two teams that was decided by a single goal or less. With the draw, UNF moves to 4-6-2 on the year, with a 2-0-1 mark in Atlantic Sun Conference play. Jacksonville is now 5-4-2 and 2-0-1 in the A-Sun.
The Ospreys are next in action on Friday, Oct. 5, when they welcome Florida Gulf Coast to Hodges Stadium for a 7 p.m. match. After tonight's action, FGCU sits atop the A-Sun standings with a 3-0 conference record.
