Complete Game Notes
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team faces an important pair of home games this weekend as they host first-place Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson for a pair of matches on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Last Friday, the Ospreys played cross-town rival Jacksonville to a 1-1 draw after a pair of overtime periods. UNF enters this weekend's bouts tied for second place in the Atlantic Sun Conference with seven points, alongside Jacksonville and Mercer.
Florida Gulf Coast (Fri. Oct. 5, 7 p.m.) currently leads the pack with 12 points over its first four conference games. The Eagles are led by sophomore Shannen Wacker, who earned national accolades last week by scoring five goals in two games. Wacker now has 10 goals on the year, good for second in the A-Sun.
FGCU leads the all-time series against the Ospreys, 5-0-1, earning wins in the last three meetings between the teams. Last year, the teams met twice on the field. After suffering a 4-0 defeat on the road during the regular season, UNF dropped a tight, 2-1 decision in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
That match was also played on the Eagles' home field and FGCU would go on to become the A-Sun Conference Tournament Champion. Then-freshman Kathryn Shafer scored the Ospreys' only goal in that match.
Friday's match will have a pink theme in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Stetson (Sun. Oct. 7, 1 p.m.) enters this weekend with a 3-8-1 record, including a 1-2-1 conference mark. The Hatters also have a 1-4 record on the road this year. Last weekend at home, Stetson dropped 1 -0 decision to Northern Kentucky before playing Lipscomb to a 1-1 draw after two overtime periods. Offensively, the Hatters are led by Alyssa Welsh, who has notched three goals on 26 shots this season. Mara Keomanivane (2G, 0A) and Amber Grose (1G, 2A) have also chipped in with four points each.
The all-time series between UNF and Stetson sits tied at 4-4 after eight contests. The Ospreys led 4-2 at one point, but Stetson has won the last two matches to even the series. In 2010, Stetson grabbed a 1-0 victory at Hodges Stadium to knock the Ospreys out of the A-Sun Tournament. In the teams' last meeting, the Hatters edged UNF, 3-2, on an 84th minute goal in Deland. Then-sophomores Keara Murphy and Lauren Hopfensperger scored the goals that day for UNF.
Live stats will provided for both games, while Sunday's match will be streamed for free on ASun.tv. Complete game notes and season statistics can be found on the attached PDF.
