JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team will battle for a point in the SunTrust River City Rumble on Friday evening, as it welcomes cross-town rival Jacksonville to Hodges Stadium for a battle of first place teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Last weekend, the Ospreys started their 2012 A-Sun schedule on the road in exciting fashion, taking down Lipscomb, 3-2, on Friday evening, before grabbing another 3-2 victory at Northern Kentucky in overtime.
Junior midfielder Heather Botelho scored the game-winner in the 84th minute to give UNF the 3-2 victory over Lipscomb. It was both teams' first Atlantic Sun Conference game of the season. Junior Thea Linkfield and senior Michele Larrinaga also scored goals for UNF, while the Ospreys outshot Lipscomb 20-6 on the evening as a team. It was Linkfield's fourth goal of the season.
Senior Kathryne Husted scored the tying goal in the 88th minute while Larrinaga notched the game-winner in the 10th minute of overtime to give the Ospreys a 3-2 victory at Northern Kentucky on Sunday. Junior Carolina Lencina scored the first goal of the evening.
UNF came back from a one-goal deficit twice to earn victories in both matches. Linkfield, with her goal on Friday evening, has now tallied four in 2012, good for the most on the team. Larrinaga, Lencina and Husted have all scored three times for the Ospreys. Lencina also leads UNF with three assists. The offense also received an additional boost this past weekend as sophomore Kathryn Shafer returned to action after being sidelined for much of the non-conference schedule with an injury.
In 2012 thus far, Jacksonville has compiled a 5-4-1 record, including a 2-0 start in A-Sun Conference play. The Dolphins are one of three teams, along with UNF and Florida Gulf Coast, to make it out of the opening weekend of conference games with a pair of wins.
The Dolphins are led offensively by a pair of sisters. Freshman Marie Weckhurst leads the team in scoring, having netted four goals this season. She also grabbed a goal in each game this past weekend, against Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb. Weckhurst's sister, junior Raquel, has tallied four assists this year, also a team-high, in addition to scoring a goal of her own.
Jacksonville leads the way in the women's soccer portion of the cross-town rivalry, owning seven wins to UNF's three. The series once stood at 3-3, but the Dolphins have won the last four decisions, though only one of those has come on the Ospreys' home field, a 3-2 overtime win in 2010. In that match, then-freshman Carolina Lencina and then-sophomore Michele Larrinaga each scored goals in the second half to help the Opsreys force overtime in their final regular season game.
In last year's match, Lencina scored against the Dolphins for the second consecutive season, though the Ospreys fell 2-1 on JU's home turf.
There are multiple pre-game activities planned for UNF students at Friday's match, including the first official “Pre-Game at the Parking Lot” in Lot 18 adjacent to Hodges Stadium. Further information can be found on the attached PDF.
UNF defeated Jacksonville in last year's SunTrust River City Rumble, 13-7. It was UNF's first outright victory in the annual contest between Jacksonville's two Division I institutions since 2006-07.
