About SunTrust River City Rumble
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – For the first time in three weeks, University of North Florida volleyball returns to the River City on Friday night. However, the Ospreys will be the visitors over at cross-town rival Jacksonville in this season's first of two SunTrust River City Rumble matches.
“There is a little more at stake when any UNF team takes on JU,” said head coach Steve Loeswick, “but our focus and goals will remain the same. We will prepare for the match and attempt to play at a consistent, high-level throughout. It should be a great match!”
Since 2005, UNF and Jacksonville have competed in the SunTrust River City Rumble for bragging rights and the “SunTrust Old Wooden Barrel.” Last year, UNF won by a score of 13-7, which was the largest margin of victory in the series. At stake on Friday night will be one of the first two Barrel Points of the season.
Friday's night will be the eighth-straight road match for the Ospreys, who will try to snap a three-match skid and pick up their first Atlantic Sun win of the season. UNF comes off a 3-0 loss at Florida Gulf Coast on Tuesday. With 10 digs on Tuesday night, Nicole Baran got a little closer to becoming UNF's all-time digs leader. The St. Augustine, Fla.-native now has 1,591 career digs and is just 26 from breaking Tara Taylor's mark of 1,616. Baran, whose mark is currently third in the record books, is also just two behind Traci Till's 1,593 career digs.
Jacksonville has its home-opener on Friday night after playing its first 16 matches on the road. The Dolphins ended the road swing with a 3-0 A-Sun win at Stetson on Tuesday night. That win halted a five-match losing skid. Led by 11 kills from Gabriela Roman and 10 from Taylor Nyquist, Jacksonville hit .312 in the first set and .400 in the third set against the Hatters. Meanwhile, the Dolphins' kills leader, Sammie Strausbaugh made nine kills at Stetson, bringing her team-leading kills total up to 151.
UNF leads the all-time series 11-9. In both of last year's matches, the Ospreys trailed Jacksonville 2-0 before rallying to take the final three sets and winning in dramatic, five-set fashion. UNF's been on the winning side for the last three meetings with the Dolphins.
Match time is set for 7 p.m., from Jacksonville's Swisher Gymnasium.
