HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Atlantic Sun Conference play gets underway for the University of North Florida volleyball team this weekend when the Ospreys travel to Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb.
“We are very excited to start the Atlantic Sun regular season,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “Playing perhaps the best two teams in the league on the road will be a challenge. But it is a challenge we are looking forward to. These two teams are very talented and well-coached. The matches, win or lose, will highlight some areas we need to get better in order to be the team we want to be at the end of the year. It should be quite an exciting weekend!”
UNF is an all-time 6-1 in Atlantic Sun openers and owns a 4-1 record when opening conference play on the road.
UNF carries a seven-match winning streak into the weekend. It is the longest winning streak in the Ospreys' Division I years. The Ospreys are coming off four-straight road wins, which included a 3-0 showing at last weekend's Winthrop Classic. Nicole Baran was selected as the tournament's MVP and also received A-Sun Player of the Week honors after having a pair of 30-dig matches last week. Additionally, Britt Claessens and Anna Budinska earned All-Tournament honors at the Winthrop Classic. Claessens put up 90 assists in seven sets and averaged 12.86 assists per set.
Northern Kentucky and Lipscomb opened Atlantic Sun play against each other earlier this week. Lipscomb came back to take a 3-2 win at Northern Kentucky on Tuesday night as the Lady Bisons have won five of their last six A-Sun openers.
Despite a 0-1 start to conference play, Northern Kentucky still has the A-Sun's top overall record. The newest A-Sun team enters the weekend with a 12-2 overall mark and had a four-match winning streak prior to Tuesday. The Norse are currently in their first year of re-classifying as a Division I school after being a Division II institution since 1985. Northern Kentucky leads the A-Sun in hitting percentage (.243), assists (13.08 per set), kills (14.29 per set) and aces (1.86 per set). The Norse have the A-Sun's top hitter and assist maker in Jenna Ruber (.371) and Jenna Schreiver (11.45 assists/set). Shelby Buschur leads the team with 158 kills and 41.0 total blocks, while Kylee Tarantino has a team-high 232 digs.
UNF and Northern Kentucky played each other when both schools were Division II institutions. The series is tied a 2-2. In the last meeting, UNF won 3-0 in 2003 during the UNF Labor Day Classic.
The 2011 Atlantic Sun Champions and this year's pick to win the conference, Lipscomb faced a tough out-of-conference tournament slate that included teams like Long Beach State, then-No. 13 Kentucky, North Carolina, Missouri, TCU and Arizona. The Lady Bisons return home for the first time this season since hosting the Lipscomb Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1 where they went 2-2 during their own tournament. However, Lipscomb heads into the weekend with a 59-5 A-Sun record dating back to the 2008 season and hosts Jacksonville on Friday night. Lauren Ford has the conference's second-highest kills mark, averaging 3.73 kills/set.
Lipscomb leads the all-time series 7-2 and won 3-0 on Oct. 15, 2011 in the last match between UNF and the Lady Bisons. UNF's last win over the Lady Bisons came in the 2006 season when the Ospreys came away with a 3-0 sweep in Nashville.
The UNF-Northern Kentucky match takes place at 7 p.m., on Friday night, while the UNF-Lipscomb match is set for a 3 p.m., EST on Saturday. Both matches will have live stats available as well as a free live video stream via A-Sun.TV, which can be accessed by clicking on the above links.
