ROCK HILL, S.C. – The final regular-season tournament takes place for University of North Florida volleyball this weekend when the Ospreys play in the Winthrop Classic Friday and Saturday at Winthrop Coliseum.

“Each of the three teams we will face presents a different challenge for us and we are excited to play this weekend,” said head coach Steve Loeswick. “This tournament gives us another opportunity to improve as a team and a few things in our game so that we are ready for the start of Atlantic Sun play next weekend.”

The tournament begins on Friday against Western Carolina at 5 p.m. UNF then faces North Carolina A&T at 10 a.m., and then Winthrop at 3 p.m.

This weekend might include a little déjà vu in terms of the conferences UNF faces this weekend. At its own Radisson/North Florida Invitational last weekend, the Ospreys welcomed teams from the Big South (Presbyterian), MEAC (Florida A&M) and Southern (Davidson). This weekend, UNF faces teams from those three conferences again in Western Carolina (Southern), North Carolina A&T (MEAC) and Winthrop (Big South).

UNF brings a four-match winning streak into the weekend. The Ospreys won all three of its matches at the Radisson/North Florida Invitational and are coming off a Tuesday night sweep of Bethune-Cookman in Daytona Beach. Senior Paige Pridgeon made her 1,000th career dig on Tuesday in order to become just the third player in UNF history with 1,000 career kills and 1,000 career digs. She is the only active A-Sun player to reach both of those benchmarks.

Western Carolina, who has lost seven of its last eight matches, will attempt to rebound from a 3-0 setback at ETSU on Tuesday. UNF is the third of four Atlantic Sun teams on Western Carolina's schedule this season. In additional to ETSU, the Catamounts lost to North Kentucky on Aug. 24. Their fourth Atlantic Sun opponent also comes at the Winthrop Invitational when the Catamounts open Saturday with Mercer at Noon. Kills leader Caitlin Piechota has not played in Western Carolina's last two matches, but Jordan Timmerman has led the Catamount offense against Campbell and ETSU. Timmerman, posted a 21-kill, 12 dig double-double in the 3-2 win against Campbell, enters the weekend with 98 kills.

North Carolina A&T continues to search for its first win of the 2012 season. The Aggies were also swept in a Tuesday night match, falling 3-0 at Gardner-Webb. It was the Aggies' fourth consecutive sweep. North Carolina A&T has already faced one Atlantic Sun team this season in conference newcomer Northern Kentucky, falling 3-1 to the Norse at the Western Carolina Catamounts Classic. Brooke Stamnes leads the Aggies in aces (19) and kills (91).

Winthrop is UNF's only opponent this weekend that did not have a mid-week match prior to the weekend's tournament. The Eagles' match with UNF will also be their first of two matches on Saturday. Winthrop is currently 1-0 on its home court this season after a 3-0 win over Appalachian State on Aug. 28, but the Eagles carry a six-match losing skid into the tournament and have been swept in its last five matches. Jennica Mullins leads Winthrop with 77 kills, but a few dumps from setter Stephanie Palmer can be expected as well. Palmer has 76 kills and 199 assists on the season.
