Women's Soccer Plays Host to Georgia Southern, Navy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The University of North Florida women's soccer team will conclude their four-game homestand this weekend as it welcomes Georgia Southern and Navy to Hodges Stadium on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
Last weekend, the Ospreys turned in two straight shutouts with a 2-0 blanking of South Carolina State on Friday evening, followed by a 3-0 romp over Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon.
UNF used a pair of goals from junior forward Thea Linkfield to take down South Carolina State 2-0 on Friday evening. After an evenly-matched first period, the Ospreys grabbed an 8-2 on shots in the second half, earning a 13-5 advantage for the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Beninati made four saves for the Ospreys to earn her second career shutout. Both of Linkfield's goals were assisted by junior forward Carolina Lencina.
On Sunday, three different Ospreys found the back of the net as the Ospreys earned their second consecutive shutout, 3-0 over Gardner-Webb. Beninati notched her second consecutive shutout, the third of her career, using six saves to blank the Bulldogs. Her efforts over the weekend led to her being named the Atlantic Sun Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, the first such award of her career.
Linkfield, Lencina and senior Kathryn Husted all notched goals for the Ospreys. UNF kept up a well-rounded attack throughout the match, with 11 different Ospreys tallying shots.
As for this weekend's opponents, Georgia Southern will enter Friday's match with a 2-0-1 record in 2012 thus far. The Eagles opened their season with a 2-0 victory at fellow A-Sun member Stetson. They then defeated Gardner-Webb at home, 3-0, before playing to a 1-1 draw against High Point. Freshman midfielder Nora El-Shami has netted two goals for the Eagles, who have gotten at least one goal from five different players so far.
In the three matchups between the two teams, the Ospreys have grabbed victory in the last two after dropping the inaugural match in Statesboro. In their most recent encounter, UNF took down the Eagles 4-1 on the campus of Jacksonville University. Then-freshman Michele Larrinaga scored a pair of goals in that win.
Sunday's foe, the Midshipmen, will enter this weekend at 3-1 on the season, having grabbed three straight victories after a season-opening loss to Maryland. Highlighting the run of wins was a 6-0 home trouncing of A-Sun member USC Upstate. Up until this weekend, Navy has played also all of its games at home, outscoring opponents 11-6 through its four matches. Junior forward Paloma Perez has led the Midshipmen offensively, grabbing two goals and four assists en route to last week's Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week award. Sophomore forward Morgan Dankanich has also netted three goals and an assist for Navy.
The Ospreys have never faced Navy in women's soccer.
UNF currently owns three of the top four spots on the A-Sun's leaderboard for career points among active players. Lencina, on the wings of a goal and three assists this weekend, has grabbed the top spot with 37 (12G, 13A), edging out fellow junior Lauren Hopfensperger, who's 33 points (15G, 3A) have her tied for second. Senior Michelle Larrinaga currently sits in fourth with 32 points (14G, 4A).
