PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – The No. 11 ranked University of North Florida golf team capped an historic season Thursday earning a tie for 12th at the 2012 NCAA Golf Championship played at historic Riviera Country Club.
The Ospreys, who posted the program's best ever Division I finish, carded a final round 297 and finished with a three-day total of 878. UNF finished tied with Florida and was just three strokes shy of reaching the top eight and advancing to match play in the championship event.
Junior Kevin Phelan closed his solid week of work leading the Ospreys with a final day 73 (+2). Phelan tallied a 54-hole score of 216 (+3) en route to finishing tied for 21st in the individual standings.
“Unfortunately today was a tough end to a really great year,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “I could not be more proud of the effort the guys played with all season and especially this week. We just came up a few putts short in the end. This is obviously a wonderful accomplishment for our program and hopefully we can build on this experience as our program continues to grow on the national level.”
Senior Kevin Aylwin carded a 74 in his final collegiate round of golf and finished tied for 45th at 219. Freshman MJ Maguire also shot a 74 on Thursday to finish tied for 69th at 223. Fellow freshman Joey Petronio finished tied for 89th at 225 following a final round 76 while junior Sean Dale rounded out the Osprey lineup with a score of 230 (T-123rd).
Alabama boasted the low score in stroke play posting a score of 859. The Crimson Tide claimed the top seed for match play after edging second-place UCLA (861) by two shots. The rest of the group advancing to Friday's match play competition includes Texas (869), San Diego State (871), California (871), Washington (872) and Oregon (873).
Kent State and Florida State tied for the eighth and final spot at 875 and will square off in a playoff beginning on hole No. 18 at 8 a.m. (PT). All five players participate with the four best scores counting on each hole until the tie is broken. The winner advances to match play as the No. 8 seed and will meet Alabama in the opening match.
Thomas Peters of Illinois fired a three-day total of 208 (-5) to earn medalist honors and the 2012 NCAA Individual National Championship.
North Florida finished the 2011-12 season as the Atlantic Sun Champions along with claiming a program best five tournament titles.
